Swedish invention gives free mobile phone calls

Does making free voice calls using your mobile phone sound like a good idea? A new Swedish invention launches next month that will enable users to do precisely that.

Swede Jerry Pettersson has developed what he calls the IP Drum Mobile Skype Cable, a package of software and wire that will offer cell phone users the chance to connect their phones to a computer and use Internet protocol (IP) telephony to make free calls.

The new system was showcased at the international Communicasia trade fair in Singapore in June and is due to be launched on 15 September.

Users will require access to Skype, a computer program for making free phone calls over the Internet that was developed by ** Swedish high-tech entrepreneur Niklas Zennström.

They will also require a personal computer equipped with broadband access and one of Pettersson's revolutionary cables.

Pettersson predicted his innovation would lead to lower tariffs for mobile phone calls. "It will force cell phone operators to rethink their price strategies for international mobile calls," he said.

That is what has kept me from using Skype!
